I-26/US-378 Interchange Replacement
2006 ACEC South Carolina Engineering Excellence Award,
Structural Systems over $10 million
As the design engineer, Wilbur Smith Associates implemented an innovative temporary system to address traffic maintenance during construction. The system incorporated existing frontage roads and included multiple slip ramps, temporary walls, and asphalt lifts. The Firm used steel girders designed as simple spans with a continuous deck to eliminate the need for maintenance-intensive expansion joints and bearings — a first-of-its-kind design in South Carolina. The resulting structure (constructed with minimal traffic interruption) alleviates traffic congestion, improves safety, reduces maintenance requirements, and accommodates future lane expansion.
