Study Overview

Welcome to the 2008 Idaho Airport System Plan web site. This site will provide you with information about the project process as well as up-to-date information about activities associated with the project.

Idaho’s air transportation system has been developed in a diverse manner to serve the state’s transportation and economic needs. The State Airport System Plan (SASP) is an important tool for the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), helping to shape key policies and directing development needs of the Idaho system of airports for years to come.

The SASP is ITD’s comprehensive plan for linking statewide aviation facilities with those of the nation and the world. Idaho’s Airport System Plan (IASP) also works in concert with Idaho’s Transportation Vision. The Transportation Vision examines all of the state’s transportation needs and sets the direction for making improvements and investments in all modes of transportation. Idaho’s Transportation Vision (http://itd.idaho.gov/planning/futuretravel/Vision.pdf) was adopted in 2004. The SASP follows a similar approach while providing a performance based analysis.

To ensure the effectiveness of the IASP, a strategic approach will be followed providing a blueprint to insure that Idaho’s future system of airports meets the state’s transportation and economic needs. The IASP will provide guidance for the long term development of Idaho’s air transportation system and will be characterized by the following elements:

  • Quality: The ISASP will be technically sound.
  • Inclusive: The ISASP will provide a macro view of Idaho’s public use airports.
  • Responsibility: The ISASP will provide a basis for funding decisions.
  • Effectiveness: The ISASP will provide an opportunity to show how investment provides return
  • Sustainable: The ISASP will provide an ongoing and flexible planning process.
