| From feasibility studies and in-service inspections to new and rehabilitative design, contract documents, and construction phase support, Wilbur Smith Associates is a leader in bridge design and inspection. Structural design experience ranges from simple single-span bridges to complex highway, rail, and parking structures. Clients’ projects benefit from state-of-the-art bridge analysis and inspection techniques; for example, in the early 1980s WSA engineers used non-linear static analysis in bridge seismic designs, a forerunner to today’s industry standards. The firm pioneered the design of embedded integral post-tensioned caps in structural steel bridges in the United States, and developed the FHWA inspection manual for fracture-critical bridge members and provided instruction on its use for more than 10 years. WSA was one of the first to use rock-climbing techniques in the inspection of tall bridges, as well. Clients also benefit from the firm’s bridge research for FHWA and the National Academy of Sciences, which has been used in technology transfer worldwide.
WSA engineers have designed hundreds of highway and rail bridges, and have inspected tens of thousands throughout the world. Collectively their design expertise covers all types of moderate-span roadway and rail bridges, complex ramps, and overpasses, and the firm has won awards for major waterway crossings. Past projects include most categories of bridge configuration and contemporary structural materials, from pedestrian bridges to heavy and transit rail structures to cut-and-cover tunnels. This broad expertise enables designers to devise appropriate and efficient solutions to meet client needs.
