TRB Committee AT055
Motor Vehicle Size and Weight
Scope: This
Transportation Research Board (TRB) committee is concerned with the issue of motor vehicle size and weight, and the problems associated with larger and heavier trucks. It is concerned with the social, economic and political factors related to motor vehicle size and weight; the interrelationships of larger loads with pavements, shoulders, structures, facility capacity, safety and the environment; and the effects of changing vehicle dimensions on carrier and highway economics, on other modes of freight transport, and on labor and management.
If you are interested in becoming involved in this committee, please contact the
Committee Chair.
COMMITEE NEWS
- Nov. 29 2007: Maine is preparing to release two RFPs in furtherance of its goal of satisfying CVISN Core Deployment requirements, hopefully by the end of the year. The first is to install a vehicle screening system at our highest volume Kittery I-95 Southbound weigh station. The system will include a ramp WIM to sort overweight trucks and optical character readers to read USDOT numbers and plate numbers in order to check compliance status. Satellite WIM sites will be installed in two “bypass” routes to alert enforcement to overweight trucks seeking to bypass the detail. The second RFP, which will be issued in tandem with the first, is development of a CVIEW system containing registration, safety inspection, taxation and other commercial vehicle data to feed into the vehicle screening system as well as to mobile units throughout the state. We hope to issue the RFPs by the end of the year, with contract award sometime next summer. Funding is partly through already awarded FMCSA CVISN grants.
